Delaware River

In the Delaware region you'll find streets lined with colonial homes, the mighty bulwark of the USS Battleship New Jersey and the gold dome of the New Jersey Statehouse. It's a relaxing area marked by country farms and historic landmarks.

From the first discovery of dinosaur bones to the onset of women's suffrage, New Jersey has played a part in many of our nation's most pivotal events throughout history. At Trenton you can tour the restored Old Barracks and learn more about the many battles of the American Revolution fought nearby. On the campus of Princeton University (which is historic in its own right) you'll find Nassau Hall, meeting place of the Continental Congress. Within this region one can also find the site of one of the most enduring images of the American Revolution: Washington's Christmas crossing of the Delaware River. Those who prefer a more active look into the past can relive history first hand: craftspeople still live and work in the preserved 19th town of Batsto.

The Tony Award winning McCarter Theatre hosts a complete season of plays, music, dance and specialty performances by world-famous artists. Those who prefer fine arts can stroll the 35 acres of the Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton. Other arts centers in the Delaware region include the Patriots Theater, The South Jersey Performing Arts Center in Camden and the Tweeden Center on the Camden waterfront.

The one million acres of the Pine Barrens stand as the largest tract of open land on the Mid-Atlantic coast. Within the Pine Barrens are over 1000 species of plants and animals. The New Jersey State Aquarium, located on the Camden Waterfront, features a 760,000-gallon open ocean tank that houses an impressive variety of ocean creatures.

In this corner of the Garden State residents are especially fond of the many "pick-your-own" farms that allow you to choose baskets of sweet corn, blueberries, peaches, and tomatoes. At the Howell Living Historical Farm in Titusville one can get a glimpse of farm life at the turn of the 20th century.
