Skylands

The Skylands Region is known for their historic villages and romantic B&B's. It's a great spot for those who just want to relax while they learn a little about New Jersey's history.

The restored 19th century Waterloo Village allows the public a glimpse into the past, right down to a historic gristmill and an apothecary shop. This National Historic Site offers ongoing special events throughout the year including include knitting workshops, a music festival and an antiques fair. The Village gives theme-based group tours for visitors with topics like Life on the Morris Canal, A Day on the Rutan Farm, or A Leanpe Village Adventure.

Another historical landmark is Morristown National Historic Park, the site of George Washington's headquarters in 1779-80. A number of museums and walking trails are located inside the national park.

Nature-lovers can also power their way through over 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail or check out the Sussex Branch and Pauliinskill Valley trails, which wind through 50 miles of wilderness in Sussex and Warren counties. Other popular outdoor spots include the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, the Kittatinny Mountains and the Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia. The nearby Lakota Wolf Preserve allows visitors to see wolves in their natural environment. For those who enjoy winter sports, well-known skiing areas such as Mountain Creek, Hidden Valley, and High Point State Park can also be found in this region.

Shopaholics can explore the lovely old-fashioned streets of Frenchtown and Chester that are lined by antique stores and galleries. And for those who just love a good bargain, outlet stores can be found at Flemington.

During the annual New Jersey Festival of Ballooning (held in July), hundreds of colorful hot air balloons soar the skies above. In April Lambertville hosts Shad Fest, a celebration that coincides with the annual run of American shad up the Delaware River. While the festival features plenty of fish, there are also a number of outdoor arts, crafts and activities to enjoy.
